Shopify Translate & Adapt Auto-Sync: How to Keep Translations Current Before BFCM
Translate & Adapt can now update translations weekly with Auto-sync. Here's who can use it, how it differs from Translate now, and how to plan translations before BFCM.

Black Friday campaigns change store content quickly: new product descriptions, offer wording, shipping cut-offs. For a store selling in several languages, every one of those changes also has to reach the translated storefront. If it doesn't, a shopper in Germany or France can read last month's text while the English store shows this week's offer.
On October 9, 2026, Shopify added Auto-sync to Translate & Adapt for stores in 12 European countries. It keeps machine translations up to date on a weekly schedule. That helps, but a weekly cycle needs planning before BFCM. This guide covers what changed, who can use it, which languages to turn it on for, and when to use Translate now instead.
What Shopify Changed in Translate & Adapt
Before this update, editing a product description or other store content meant going back into Translate & Adapt to translate it again. Shopify's announcement notes that translated storefronts "fell behind and buyers landed on outdated content in their language."
The update brings three changes:
- Auto-sync. Turn it on for a language, and Shopify translates new and updated content automatically each week.
- More languages. Shopify can now translate up to 8 languages for eligible stores, up from 2.
- A renamed button. "Auto-translate" is now Translate now, for translating immediately instead of waiting for the next sync.
The changelog also repeats a long-standing rule: "translations you wrote manually are never overwritten." Shopify's Help Center article on automatic translation says the same about content you edited in Translate & Adapt: automatic translation "doesn't change any translations that you added or edited manually." What it does is add translations for content that hasn't been translated yet and update machine translations that are out of date.
Who Can Use the New Auto-Sync Feature?
Shopify's changelog calls this an update for "EU merchants", but the list of countries is wider than the EU. It covers stores located in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The UK and Switzerland aren't EU members, but they're on the list.
The Help Center adds two details:
- The list is based on where your store is located, not where your customers are. "The automatic translation features that you can use depend on the country where your store is located."
- The button in the app is the practical check. "If the Translate & Adapt app displays Translate now for your store, then your store can translate up to 8 languages and use Auto-sync." Shopify adds: "This applies even if your store is located in a country that isn't listed."
So a store outside the 12 countries isn't automatically ruled out. Stores that don't see Translate now keep the Auto-translate button, up to 2 languages besides the default, and "Auto-sync isn't available." Open Translate & Adapt and look for Translate now before planning around Auto-sync.
Shopify doesn't list a plan requirement for these features.
Auto-Sync vs. Translate Now: What's the Difference?
| Auto-sync | Translate now | |
|---|---|---|
| When it runs | On the same day and time each week | Once, when you click it |
| Covers later edits | Yes, at the next weekly run | No, you need to run it again |
| Default | Off; set per language | Available in eligible stores |
| Best for | Ongoing changes that can wait a few days | Changes customers need to see soon |
Two timing details matter:
- Turning on Auto-sync doesn't translate right away. Shopify says "the first translation happens at your store's next weekly Auto-sync time, which can be up to a week later." If the language isn't published yet, the first translation waits for the next weekly time after you publish it.
- Translate now isn't instant either. You get an email when it finishes, and Shopify notes that larger stores can take a few hours.
Which Languages Should You Turn Auto-Sync On For?
Auto-sync is a decision you make per language. There's no single right setting; it depends on your store. These questions help:
- Which languages do your markets actually use? Start with published languages that serve markets with real orders.
- How often does content change? Languages covering frequently updated products or campaigns benefit most.
- How many slots do you have? Shopify says eligible stores can translate "up to 8 languages automatically, in addition to your store's default language." A language uses one slot however you translate it: "Using either Auto-sync or Translate now, or both, for a language will contribute to 1 of your 8 language slots." But slots don't come back: "After you translate a language automatically, you can't switch that automatic translation to a different language," and "Removing a language from your store doesn't reset your limit." Choose languages you'll keep.
- Do you maintain translations by hand? Manual translations aren't overwritten, but content you've never translated manually will be machine-translated.
- Can someone review important pages? Shopify's advice is: "Before you publish translations to your storefront, review them for accuracy." Plan who checks key pages in each language.
Our recommendation: turn Auto-sync on for the languages behind your main international markets, and keep a manual review step for high-traffic pages.
The BFCM Risk: Why Weekly Updates Need Planning
A weekly cycle means timing matters. How long a change waits depends on when it lands: a change made the day before your store's weekly run waits a day, while one made just after it waits almost a week.
Illustrative scenario, not a Shopify case: a store's weekly Auto-sync happens on a Tuesday. On Wednesday, the team updates its BFCM banner text and three product descriptions. With Auto-sync alone, the French and German storefronts would show the old text until the next Tuesday. Clicking Translate now for those languages gets the new text translated sooner, though larger stores can wait a few hours.
What this means before BFCM:
- Know your weekly sync time. Plan big content changes before it.
- Use Translate now for urgent changes: offer wording, deadlines and product details that change close to the sale. Review the result when Shopify's completion email arrives.
What automatic translation doesn't cover
Shopify documents two limits:
- Legal policies. "Your store's legal policies can't be translated automatically." You translate them manually, and Shopify suggests considering a professional translator for legal and policy pages. If you use Shopify's automated policies, check each language version separately.
- Some theme content. "For some theme content, such as your theme's default text, only missing translations are added, and existing translations aren't updated." Theme text you translated once won't be refreshed.
The Help Center doesn't say whether third-party app content, custom theme sections or checkout text are included. That's not a documented limit, but it's a reason to check those areas in each language yourself rather than assume they're current.
If you schedule BFCM changes with Shopify Rollouts, check the translated versions of those changes too.
A Pre-BFCM Translation Checklist
These are our recommendations, not Shopify requirements:
- Check availability. Open Translate & Adapt and confirm your store shows Translate now.
- Prioritize languages by the markets that actually bring orders, keeping the slot limit in mind.
- Turn on Auto-sync for those languages at least a week before you need it, since the first run can take up to a week, and note your store's weekly sync time.
- Review high-priority content in each language: best-selling products, recently changed descriptions, campaign messaging, discount wording and shipping information.
- Use Translate now for urgent or last-minute changes.
- Manually review important translations before and during the sale.
- Test the storefront: the language switcher and the full journey from product page to checkout in each language, including app and custom sections.
- Handle legal policies separately, since they need manual translation.
For the wider setup, see our guides to Shopify Markets and selling in a new country. Our BFCM product page checklist covers what each product page should show.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Expecting real-time updates. Auto-sync is weekly.
- Turning it on the week of the sale. The first translation can take up to a week.
- Using slots on low-priority languages. A used slot can't be moved to another language.
- Publishing machine translations unreviewed. Shopify itself says to review them.
- Forgetting legal policies. They need manual translation.
- Assuming every storefront element is translated. Theme default text only gets missing translations, and app or checkout content should be checked rather than assumed.
Conclusion
Auto-sync removes the most common reason translated storefronts fall behind: someone forgetting to re-translate after an edit. But it runs weekly, starts at your next sync time, and uses slots you can't reassign. Before BFCM, check whether your store sees Translate now, choose your Auto-sync languages carefully, note your weekly sync time, and use Translate now for anything customers need to see soon.
If your international setup involves custom themes or apps that need translating alongside your store content, our Shopify development team can help you review it.

Frequently asked questions
What is Auto-sync in Shopify Translate & Adapt?
It's a per-language setting that translates new and updated store content automatically on the same day and time each week. It's off by default and doesn't change translations you added or edited yourself.
Which stores can use Auto-sync?
Shopify lists stores located in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It also says that if Translate & Adapt shows Translate now for your store, your store can use Auto-sync and translate up to 8 languages, even if its country isn't listed. Check the app to confirm.
How many languages can Shopify translate automatically?
Up to 8 languages for stores that see Translate now, and 2 for other stores, in both cases in addition to your default language. Using Auto-sync, Translate now or both for a language uses one slot. A used slot can't be switched to another language, and removing a language doesn't reset the limit.
Will Auto-sync overwrite my own translations?
No. Shopify says automatic translation doesn't change translations you added or edited manually. It updates machine translations that are out of date.
Should I use Translate now or wait for Auto-sync before BFCM?
Use Translate now for changes customers need to see soon, such as BFCM offer wording. Auto-sync runs weekly, so a change made just after a sync can wait up to a week. Review important translations either way.
